MCSJ: Equity, Access, Advocacy, & Empowerment
On behalf of the Maryland Counselors for Social Justice (MCSJ) Executive Board Members (2018-2019) we would like to welcome you to the MCSJ Blog.
Today, July 1st, officially marks the beginning of the term of office of MCSJ Board members. Congratulations, to the first MCSJ Board members: President, Dr. Chioma Anah; President-Elect, Dr. Don Trahan; Counselor Representative, Evan Velleman; Secretary, Rebecca Schaffner; Treasurer, Perri Hooper; Student Representative, Kshipra Jain; and Veteran Representative, Jasmine Templeton.
MCSJ was created to:
* Promote social justice advocacy, and challenge systems of injustice and inequity in our society.
* Address mental health issues caused by social marginalization.
* Address oppressive issues that affect professional counselors, students, and clients.
* Work to assist in positive change in our society.
* Call attention to additional ways counselors can empower, and be better advocates in their work with diverse, marginalized and disenfranchised clients, through professional development.
We would like to thank: Dr. Chioma Anah, who worked to galvanize counselors in creating this much needed new social justice division, in response to the daily barrage of reports highlighting human rights violations, and a lack of care for cultural trauma and other social conditions for clients that live on the margins; Suzette Nozick and Evan Velleman, who were the first key members who shared in the vision and possibilities of MCSJ, and tirelessly assisted with its creation; and Cathie Eaton, who gave MCSJ the unwavering support needed to make this division and our vision a reality. We would also like to thank our other Board Members; Dr. Don Trahan, Jr., Rebecca Schaffner, Perri Hooper, Kshipra Jain, and Jasmine Templeton for courageously helping push our social justice advocacy agenda forward. Also, Committee Chairs; Deneen R. Robin, Grace Abraham Lewis, and Sergio D. Washington, for helping us make a difference.
Equity, Access, Advocacy, and Empowerment are core to MCSJ’s vision, and we are committed to ensuring that it guides and influences the impact we expect to make, as we work with counselors to move professional counseling forward.
We are very hopeful and excited about what this journey represents, and we encourage all of you to join us, as we roll up our sleeves to work towards a just future for our community, professional counseling, counselors, and clients.
Thank you!
Respectfully,
MCSJ (2018-2019)
